Hocus Pocus terrified me as a child and I still feel like I can't properly look Bette Midler in the eye.
I'm 28 years old and before every single movie was readily available on the internet, even before Tivo and DVR, my mom would bootleg record all of our favorite movies from the TV. I watched Wizard of Oz so much I can still remember the commercials that we had to fast forward over constantly. I never even saw the beginning of Mrs. Doubtfire because someone accidentally taped the Riki Lake show over it. Always wondered why Robin Williams had to dress like a women... Well my brother being 4 years older than me insisted we watch Hocus Pocus and it was my job to tell my mom when it would be playing on the Disney channel so that she could set the VCR to record it. Well I got my movies confused and accidentally told her to record Escape to Witch Mountain. We had to wait until next Halloween to be able to finally record to right movie. Hocus Pocus.
The next year I was old enough to not be terrified of lighting a candle and summoning Bette Midler into my life and I became obsessed with the movie. It even led me to try to "fly" off of my trampoline with a broom in attempts to be a witch. Those were my darker periods. I believe that ABC Family, yeah I still call "Freeform" ABC family, now shows Hocus Pocus on TV during October every other day. When did it become such a cult classic? Don't get me wrong, it's got great costumes, a musical number, enough risque dialogue to make me ask my mom what a "virgin" was, and a dreamy teenage boy lead. It definitely deserves the praise. Also, where is Max Dennison now?
Perhaps the most terrifying element of Hocus Pocus is that book, that was alive. The entire movie was about three witches sucking the lives out of children to stay youthful but for some reason I was petrified of the spell book. I decided to overcome my fears like any food blogger would. Naturally, I turned the iconic book into a brownie. Stay tuned next year for when I turn that girl from the Grudge into a cupcake.
