I think I'm starting to understand the idea of "binge tv watching."
In these modern days, ones accolades, their social standing, their reason d'etre, is encapsulated in their Netflix queue. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I've been trying to work in "reason d'etre" into my writing for months now. But in reality, we are a civilization that has become addicted to the fact that they can essentially stream live TV, according to their taste, 24/7. The trouble with Netflix is, you can dole out those passwords like playing cards. Everyone from my freshman year college roommate to my high school piano teacher is reaping the benefits of my mother's hard work in signing up for an account. And can you blame me when I get upset that my brother's ex girlfriend's taste in Nazi war documentaries is tainting my recommendations.
Do you ever get a little self conscious about what Netflix thinks would be appropriate viewing content to suggest to you? Right now I'm being targeted with "Don't Call me Crazy," a charming documentary about adolescents in glorified insane asylums. One the other side of the spectrum, I often get hit with the "Witty Comedies Featuring a Strong Female Lead." Maybe I have a thing for Sandra Bullock movies ok?
Some people go for the o'l "netflix and chill," but I'm more of a fan of "netflix and cook." Try it out. But yes, I bang out some meals while watching 5 episodes of How I Met Your Mother. The half hour sitcom blocks provide for the most satisfying binge watching. Without commercials those bad boys are roughly 15 minutes. Which means in a matter of hours, I can delve deep into character's personalities, see relationships start and end, and become fully obsessed with a show.
This particular evening's program was a corn and shrimp chowder with Old Bay cheddar biscuits. Cook time, roughly 3.5 episodes of How I Met Your Mother.
